If you do not already know, a cardigan is actually a type of sweater. A sweater is very simple a piece of clothing that can cover your arms and upper torso. The cardigan or sweater is also interchangeably used with the terms pullover, sweatshirt, jersey or guernsey or jumper. Usually the cardigan opens up in front, that is there are buttons or maybe a zipper down the front that allows you to open the cardigan up and wear it over your existing clothes. On the other hand, a pullover does not open up in front, but is a one piece clothing which surrounds the upper torso but with a hole on top for the head to pop out.

To talk some history of the cardigan, you would be surprised to know that it was actually somebody's invention. In fact it was an invention of the military! According to Wikipedia, the cardigan was actually named after James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, a British military commander, following his service in the Crimean War. Wikipedia noted that a citation was needed for this, hence I am not sure how accurate it actually is. Anyways the cardigan is usually machine- or hand-knitted from wool or cotton although cheaper ones may be partially acrylic. These are compounds which are derived from acrylic acid.

Another amazing thing about the cardigan is that they are available for both genders. Hence there is nothing to say that only women can wear cardigans, though I think more women then men use cardigans to match their outfits. So if you have not bought a cardigan, I think that it is high time that you get one!
