Booster chairs are a type of feeding chair used when your child grows out of his or her high chair, but isn't old enough to sit at the dinner table alone. There are lots of different types of booster chairs out there. They all have different features and characteristics. These relatively inexpensive pieces of furniture are great for babies and make feeding work a lot better. Use them for kids between two and five years old.

It doesn't matter who make your booster seat - all these chairs have the same purpose. Booster chairs let your child reach higher than he or she would be able to just sitting in an ordinary chair. Models with straps can help keep your child in the seat and prevent accidents. Once kids reach the age of two or so, they often become a lot more independent. Booster chairs can help them do more on their own, like eating right at the dinner table with mom and dad. If your child is tired of the high chair, this might help you. Booster chairs are also portable. Bring one with you when you go out, since your own booster seat is a lot safer than many models carried by restaurants.

There are lots of companies offer booster seats, including Fisher Price, Safety First, First Years, Bebe, and Graco. They all work in roughly the same way, but each company makes its own unique designs. While most booster seats are made to be attached to an ordinary adult chair, there are a few that can be directly connected to the table. That removes the need for an extra chair, since the booster seat is firmly attached to the table and prevents your child from leaving or falling out.

You can also find models of booster seats that have a tray to help with kids who are still messy when eating. This allows your child to sit at the table with the rest of the family, but also gives him or her a personal eating area that's easy for you to clean up. Not every booster seat has a tray, so make sure you find one that does if this seems like it'll help your child at meals. Trays also give you some extra protection for the table, since they keep small children from standing or climbing out of the booster chair before the meal is finished.

Various buckle and strap setups are used to keep kids in their seats. Some are more effective than others at doing this, however. The most common straps involve a buckle on each side of the child, and another strap between the legs. These minimal straps are good for safety, since they prevent your child from sliding out of the bottom of the chair and secure the hips. If your child likes to stand or lean forward in the chair, consider a model that offers shoulder straps, too. This kind of harness isn't absolutely necessary, but it can help improve safety and keep your child from unexpectedly attempting to leave the table.

Many parents like to reuse older baby products, too. Booster seats are one place that this is a good idea - this isn't a new type of baby furniture, and most older booster seats are still in good shape. Just make sure that the seat you're thinking about using meets the current safety guidelines. If you're not sure a booster seat is as safe as it can be, don't take the risk. Get a newer model that's been tested and you know is safe.

Since you'll be using your booster seat a lot, make sure it's practical and safe. When you go shopping for your child's booster chair, be certain it has high quality safety straps to secure your child in his or her seat. Make sure that you buy a portable booster chair if you'll need to take it out of the house. When visiting friends or going to a restaurant, you'll want a chair that's easy to carry.
