General Information:

Of the two species of crocodile occurring in Australia, the freshwater crocodile is the smaller, generally more passive variety. Also known as Johnston's crocodile, or more colloquially, "Freshie," this reptile is found across northern Australia. Although it will react violently when disturbed or provoked, the freshwater crocodile generally minds its own business and is not known to be nearly as aggressive as its saltwater counterpart.

Physical Description:

The male Australian freshwater crocodile can reach lengths of about 10 feet, and the female can be about 7 feet long. It is considerably smaller than the saltwater crocodile. The freshwater crocodile is light brown in color with dark bands across its body and along its tail.

Diet:

Its diet includes smaller animals, such as fish, frogs, birds, snakes, and turtles, as well slightly larger fish and mammals that wander close to the water's edge. Freshwater crocodiles can also be cannibalistic at times, with adults having been known to eat juveniles.

Habitat:

Freshwater crocodiles are found in Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory states of Australia. They occur primarily in freshwater lakes, swamps, rivers, billabongs, creeks, and wetlands. Although they can habit more salty areas, their larger, more aggressive cousins tend to keep them out of potentially mutual habitats.

Reproduction:

Breeding occurs during the tropical dry season. Males usually reach sexual maturity at 16 - 17 years of age and females at 11 - 14. The female lays her eggs into a hole dug into the river bank (also dug by the female). The number of eggs laid can range from 4 to 21, and usually hatch after 6 - 10 weeks of incubation. Hatching generally coincides with the start of the wet season, when food for the young, mostly insects, are especially abundant.
